5 hot signals
in livestock & aquaculture

What lies ahead for farmers before the year-end restocking season?

Vietnam’s agricultural sector posted several bright spots in the first eight months of 2026, yet beneath the positive headline figures are significant shifts in disease risks, market conditions and input management. Saigonvet has identified five signals worth watching before making any decision to expand production.

Key developments shaping the sector

Opportunities remain, but producers need a clear view of the whole picture to prepare better for the final months of the year.

01

The market is growing – but not every production model benefits equally

Vietnam agro-forestry-fishery exports

In the first eight months of 2026, Vietnam’s agro-forestry-fishery exports reached nearly USD 49.31 billion, up 7%; livestock product exports rose 30%, while aquaculture exports increased 10.9%.

But does a growing sector mean every production model will be profitable?

Worth noting: Each farm should calculate its own production costs, losses and market outlet; restocking should not be driven simply by positive market sentiment.
02

Pig herd recovery – but ASF remains an unpredictable variable

Pig herd and year-end restocking

By the end of August, Vietnam’s pig herd was estimated to have increased by 4.2%. At the same time, surveillance by the Department of Livestock Production and Animal Health detected the concurrent circulation of ASF genotype II and the recombinant strain I/II.

The herd is recovering – but epidemiological risk has not disappeared.

Worth noting: Restocking should go hand in hand with strong biosecurity and a response plan should an outbreak occur.
03

The sector is diverging: pigs and poultry up – cattle and buffalo down

Major livestock segments
+4.2%Pig herd
+2.8%Poultry
-2.1%Cattle
-6.2%Buffalo

Within the same market, different livestock segments are moving in very different directions.

Worth noting: Expansion should be based on the actual economics of each production model, not on broad market trends.
04

Aquaculture is growing – but some diseases cannot be solved by simply “switching medicines”

Shrimp farming and EHP management

Fisheries output in the first eight months reached nearly 6.95 million tonnes, up 3.8%. Yet EHP continues to be flagged as a risk in shrimp-farming areas and there is currently no specific treatment.

Worth noting: Quality seedstock, environmental management and health management from the start of the production cycle remain investments that are difficult to compromise.
05

Counterfeit and substandard veterinary medicines remain a major market risk

Warning on counterfeit veterinary medicines

Official Letter 8300/BNNMT-CNTY dated 24 Jul 2026 warns of counterfeit, substandard and untraceable veterinary medicines, as well as the online sale of antibiotic raw materials.

Worth noting: Do not look at price alone. Veterinary medicines still play an important role when used for the right disease, with the right active ingredient, dose and timing, and in full compliance with regulations.
Partnering with livestock and aquaculture producers PARTNERING WITH PRODUCERS

Perspective from Saigonvet

Opportunities remain – but restocking should be conditional and well prepared. Ahead of the Tet season, producers should assess four factors together: market outlet, biosecurity, herd health and financial capacity.

A successful production cycle is rarely determined by a single product. More often, it is the result of a series of sound decisions made at the right time.

This is also how Saigonvet sees its role: not simply as a product supplier, but as a partner that stays close to field realities, keeps pace with regulatory changes, understands disease challenges and works with producers to identify appropriate solutions at each stage.
